Sehr geehrte Lesende

Much of what architecture students learn in the studio is «tacit knowledge.» They develop the skills and sensibilities of architectural and urban design with practice, often under the supervision of instructors and peers, not by studying textbooks. Yet, despite its importance, we know relatively little about how this tacit form of knowing is transmitted. Within the research network TACK / Communities of Tacit Knowledge, we tried to open up the «black box» of knowledge production in the design studio.

Design Research Studios (DRS) are an education format directed to Bachelor and Master students in Architecture at ETH Zurich that integrate studies conducted by post-graduate researchers on complex issues like flood and urban heat. They offer an opportunity to develop landscape designs connecting people and their environment with the goal to strengthen societal and ecological resilience. The DRS in Madagascar is the last of a series of DRS led by Prof. Christophe Girot in collaboration with Prof. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey within Future Cities Lab (FCL) research programmes. Previous DRS dealt with urban cooling in Singapore and urban floods in Jakarta.

How we spend our 24-hour days varies over time, be it by changes in one’s personal life or external forces like modifications to the built environment or government-level restrictions, as was the case during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. TimeUse+ is a novel survey methodology to collect data on individuals’ time use, travel, and expenditure behaviour to understand these shifts.

«… it matters what stories we tell to tell other stories with; … what thoughts think thoughts, what descriptions describe descriptions, what ties tie ties. It matters what stories make worlds, what worlds make stories». D.J. Haraway
In September 2022, a group of 18 architects met in the village of Tschlin in the Swiss Alps. In a non-hierarchical learning format, researchers and spatial practitioners came together to experiment with the ways we perform writing.

Across the different vernaculars of the world’s urban majorities, there is renewed bewilderment as to what is going on in the cities in which they reside and frequently self-build. Prices are unaffordable and they are either pushed out or strongly lured away from central locations.
