The research project Thesaurus zum Städtebau (Thesaurus on Urban Design) will provide a structured collection of the central building blocks that constitute urban spaces: streets, squares, closes, courtyards, parks, passages and quays.
Built upon the contributions of students in the seminar Elemente des städtischen Raumes from the years 2012–2015, 80 selected case studies are analysed and compared in a uniform research and presentation form at various levels:
Urban structure at a scale of 1:10,000
Spatial form at a scale of 1:2,000
Architectural typology at a scale of 1:500
Construction at a scale of 1:100
The project ties into a rich manualistic tradition in the discipline of urban design that blossomed mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
